The crime rates in a community can be a good indicator of how safe or unsafe a community is. Fortuna’s property and violent crime rates have increased year-over-year, while the total crime rate has increased by 22%. The city is home to 24 police officers, a ratio of two officers per 1,000 residents. While this crime rate is high, it is still lower than the national average and the state average, which are both 44 percent higher.
