Learn How You Can Purchase The Right Air Filters

If you are new at purchasing air filters, there is a good chance that the wide range of options can be overwhelming for you. Air filters have classifications, rating, and values, which can be confusing for the first-time buyers. Professionals tend to agree that a good air filter for your HVAC is important for your house because a wrong one can cause a lot of problems to your system.

Too-restrictive air filters can lead to burn out controls and motors. Blowers, motors, and coils can also become clogged by wrong air filters, creating higher fan usage that can cause higher energy costs. The good news is that you can find the best air filters on the market, such as 30x30x1 air filter. In this article, you will learn how you can purchase the right air filter.

Understanding The MERV

No doubt, you need to understand the types of air filters and MERV before you decide to purchase an air filter.

MERV Between 1 And 4

These usually have spun fiberglass filters. In most cases, these are cheaply-priced and are disposable. These air filters can trap at least 80 percent of particles. The particles can be 50 microns and larger. Besides, they can also trap at least 25 percent of debris that may include particles that are between 3 and 10 micron.

Most professionals don’t recommend the use of these air filters because they offer just a minimal protection from dust and dirt. These can build up on heat exchangers, fan motors, and other dirt collecting parts. Also, these air filters are less restrictive to airflow and can catch the largest particles. The problem is that they don’t filter the smallest harmful contaminants that can affect your health.

MERV Between 5 And 8

These air filters have disposable and pleated media filters. They are considered to be mid-efficiency filters that can capture between 80 and 95 percent of the debris. These filters are more expensive than the spun fiberglass air filters with MERV 1-4. The good thing is that they are better when it comes to removing contaminants.

Electrostatic Filters

You can find electrostatic filters that have between MERV 2 and MERV 10. These air filters use charged fibers to trap particles from the air. Also, they are disposable, washer-friendly, and reusable. These air filters can sometimes last at least 8 years. Even better, they dry easily after you wash them and they can stop mold or mildew from developing. Keep in mind that they usually drop in efficiency in the long run. Therefore, if you are concerned about the air quality, then you may need to consider the other options.

MERV Between 11 And 13

These are high-efficiency filters that you can find in various configurations. It’s worth mentioning that these filters can trap particles that are 0.3 microns and other debris, such as bacteria and microorganisms. You can find some filters that are 5 inches thick while others can be 12 inches thick. Some of these filters can last up to one year.
