LED Light Therapy To Protect Eyesight

LED Light Therapy To Protect Eyesight

Bright LED light therapy has been a prominent therapy for handling a wide range of health conditions. However, many have concerns if this therapy has any adverse effect on ocular health.

Many people have asked if red light therapy can affect their eyesight. If so, how can they protect their eyes from LED light? Here is our expert opinion.

Red light LED therapy can promote proper eye function without drastic side effects. However, prolonged eye exposure to bright light can cause irritation. Therefore, one may need to use protective goggles to handle this therapy light and get the therapeutic benefits.

Let’s Discuss This In Detail.

Red Light Therapy For Protecting Eyes

The human body can be influenced a lot when exposed to light. The Hypothalamus, the hormone production area of the brain, is influenced by light to produce necessary hormones to ensure proper human functioning. Light can also influence the sleep cycle to keep human health in proper harmony.

Among the light spectrum, specific red light wavelengths are found to be exceptionally helpful to human organs, including the eyes. 630 – 660 nm red light wavelengths and 810 – 850 nm near-infrared wavelengths can influence several bodily functions to help in resolving several health concerns.

So, Why Does One Need To Protect The Eyes From LED Light?

Blue light wavelengths can cause macular degeneration that damages the light-sensitive cells in human eyes. Therefore, to protect the eyes from permanent damage, one would need to use appropriate gadgets on their eye while exposed to LED light. That’s how one can protect the eyes from harm.

Red light has the largest wavelength among other visible light and can go deeper into the skin for therapeutic benefits. Therefore, these wavelengths can benefit eye health even when users keep their eyes close. However, these light wavelengths cannot penetrate bones for further benefits.

If anyone wants to get further benefits from light therapy, they will need to include near-infrared wavelengths. When both red light and near-infrared light are combined together, the user can get rid of inflammation and better eye function. Therefore, red light therapy can be used for eye protection effectively.

Let’s Take A Look At Those Conditions And Discuss How Light Therapy Can Be Helpful In Resolving Them.

Eye Conditions And Effects Of Red Light Therapy

Red light and NIR therapies are natural, non-invasive, and have almost no drastic side effects. Many ophthalmologists are now utilizing this therapy to treat several eye conditions. Some of the conditions that this therapy can treat are:

  • Eye Inflammation: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a prominent eye condition for seniors that leads them towards blindness. It affects the central vision and causes the patients to face difficulties in seeing things. Researchers from Bulgaria conducted a study with AMD patients and successfully showed that red light therapy can improve vision and other AMD-related complications. Another study conducted in the UK complements the results of the prior study.
  • Cornel Injury: One can suffer from this injury due to scratches in the eyes or embedded foreign bodies. This condition can be severely painful and difficult to heal. In a 2016 study, researchers found that near-infrared therapy can help patients rapidly reduce cornel injury after removing foreign objects.
  • Glaucoma: Patients with glaucoma suffer from eye diseases that cause nerve damage and vision loss over time. It is another age-related eye condition and has no cure till now. Therefore, the symptoms are treated to help patients lead regular lives. Several recent clinical trials have shown that red light therapy can help treat glaucoma symptoms without causing further harm to the eye. As this treatment is non-invasive, the risk is minimal and requires no curing time.
  • Amblyopia: Amblyopia is a vision disorder, commonly known as “lazy eye.” A 2012 clinical trial with red light therapy has shown significant success in treating this condition in a group of adolescent adults. These patients experienced a significant improvement in “visual acuity” with the help of this therapy.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy: Abnormal glucose levels are the primary cause of this eye disease. This disease can demolish retinal ganglion cells that are critical for vision. Researchers have seen significant reductions in ganglion cell death in their animal trials. However, it is yet to prove effective in humans.

Other than the above-mentioned conditions, red light and near-infrared light therapy can help patients with Leber’s optic neuropathy, ocular implants, optic nerve injury, retinitis pigmentosa, and retinopathy of prematurity.

Is It Safe To Use Red Light Therapy For Eyes Every day?

Research and studies show that red light therapy has no drastic side effects. This therapy is completely natural and non-invasive. Therefore, it is safe to use every day.

However, when light therapy is used for eye conditions, it is recommended to use this therapy for two minutes per session. Also, getting a recommendation from a known ophthalmologist is highly recommended.

Bottom Line

Red light therapy has immense possibilities to help patients with several eye conditions. With this therapy, one can reduce cell damage, inflammation, and vision loss while getting healed from eye injuries rapidly.

However, using protective gadgets while taking this therapy is highly recommended. Otherwise, this therapy can impact the whole therapeutic benefit and cause irritation to the users.
