Moving Across the Country

4 Tips For Moving Across the Country

Moving across the country is an incredible journey. You can restart your life, find new opportunities, and remake yourself – if that’s what you want. There’s endless potential for the good a change like this could bring to your life.

However, the actual moving process can be a bit of a pain. There’s a lot of planning that needs to go into an adventure of this scale, and that might make things feel a little stressful. Don’t let the stress overshadow your excitement though – here are a few helpful tips that will help you get through it.

Consider Your Car

When you’re moving that far away, you need to think about what’s going to happen with your vehicle if you own one. Oftentimes, people decide to start fresh by selling their car and buying a new one in their new home.

If you don’t plan on selling your car and need to bring it along with you, you have the option of driving it there yourself or paying for auto transport. Each of these could have significant financial implications, so be sure to include those in your moving budget. While shipping might cost more, driving such a long distance will put serious miles on your car.

Think About Your Job

If you’re not moving for the sake of an exciting job opportunity, then moving across the country will probably mean you need to find a new job ASAP. Perhaps your partner has a new job and you’ve given up yours to follow them, or perhaps you’re just leaving for the sake of a new adventure.

Whatever it might be, remember to research the job opportunities in your field before diving headfirst into this change.

Do a Major Declutter

An important part of preparing your home for a move is doing a big declutter and getting rid of items you know deep down you don’t really need. This is refreshing in so many ways.

First of all, you’ll go into your new home knowing that everything matters and has a place in your life. Second, having less stuff will generally mean less packing, less unpacking and less hassle when it comes to sorting out and organising your new home.

Spend some time looking through your wardrobe and other areas of your home and finding items to donate or sell.

Go Exploring

The unpacking process is tiring and can take days or even weeks at a time. Nobody can spend 24 hours a day working at unravelling a home!

Instead of letting the chaos and exhaustion of moving bog you down for days on end, take unpacking breaks to go explore and get to know your neighbourhood. Visit parks, look for new restaurants to try out, meet up with friends or family in the area, check out nearby schools or simply go for a walk around the block and get a feel for your new home.

It’ll destress you and help you get used to the area too.
