Medical Scrubs
Generally, nurses must wear scrubs in the workplace. They are designed to be simple and plain. They usually come in solid colors that make it easy for patients to tell nurses apart and for nurses to spot stains, but there are also brighter options. Most of the time, these designer scrubs are only worn in low-risk settings or places where they are allowed by the dress code.
Most scrubs are made of a mix of polyester and cotton. It makes a uniform that stays the same color, doesn’t get dirty, and is easy to clean. Scrubs can be made entirely of cotton, or they can be made of a mix of cotton, rayon, and spandex.
Contrary to popular assumption, not all nurses must wear scrubs. Despite the prominence of scrubs in the health sector, there are times when nurses would be better off without them. Nurses who operate in specialised areas such as the maternity ward or the operation room may wear a different uniform than regular scrubs.
Smartwatches
As essential to a nurse’s outfit as sturdy shoes, watches have long served an integral function in the medical field. The nurse must keep track of time in order to efficiently manage patient schedules, assess health status, dispense prescriptions, and more.
Smartwatches like the Apple Watch and the Samsung Watch have been increasingly popular in recent years.
These gadgets accurately display the time, but they also allow the nurse to get alerts, make calls, check text messages and emails, establish alarms, and track her activity levels.
To prevent nurses from becoming overworked, smartwatches might notify them when it’s time to get some rest (based on their activity and sleep patterns), as well as remind them of other key events like social gatherings, medicine times, meal times, and more.
The nurse can leave their phone in their locker and still respond to calls, texts, and notifications if they are wearing a smartwatch.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is an important component of healthcare gear, especially during pandemics and outbreaks. PPE goods include gloves, gowns, masks, respirators, and eye protection. These things form a barrier between the nurse and potential germs, minimizing the risk of infection transmission.
Face masks are worn to prevent germs from entering the body through the mouth and nose. Cloth, N95, and surgical masks are only a few examples of the many varieties of masks on the market. When nurses are caring for patients who may be contaminated with diseases like tuberculosis or the COVID-19 virus, they can effectively protect themselves by wearing N95 or surgical masks.
Nurses should always wear gloves to prevent contamination from surfaces and patients. Also, nurses who wear gloves reduce the risk of infection in patients’ wounds. Gloves serve as a barrier that safeguards both the patient and the nurse.
Eye protection is essential in settings where there is a risk of contact with blood or other body fluids. Because the COVID-19 virus can enter the body through any mucous membranes, eye protection is crucial for nurses caring for patients infected with the virus.
Nurses must also wear high-quality Isolation gowns as they provide broad barrier protection. They are used to protect the wearer against the spread of disease-causing bacteria if the user comes into contact with potentially infectious liquid or solid material. They may also be used to assist in preventing the user from transmitting pathogens that could damage vulnerable individuals, such as those with impaired immune systems.
Why Nurses Must Adhere to Dress Codes
Nurse uniforms and other types of medical wear exist for the same reason that their names suggest: to maintain order and consistency. Patients and medical staff will always know who is who, whether they are wearing scrubs, lab coats, or something else. They also reduce disease transmission by preventing cross-contamination between medical personnel and patients.
In healthcare institutions, particularly hospitals, bugs are a widespread problem. Because it acts as a breeding ground for infectious agents, it must be kept clean and disinfected at all times, and cross-contamination must be prevented at all costs if the outbreak is to be contained.
