Pratt Research Fellows

Pratt Research Fellows

The Duke University Department of Engineering sponsors a program called the Pratt Research Fellows, a prestigious group of undergraduate engineering students who conduct extensive research in their chosen engineering field during their final two years at Duke. Students are selected for the program during their junior year based on their research interests and academic record. Many fellows publish their work in scientific journals and continue their research careers after graduation.

John Lee Pratt Animal Nutrition Senior Fellows

John Lee Pratt was known for his quiet generosity. He donated millions of dollars to charities, universities, and research centers. When he died in 1975, he left almost $11 million to Virginia Tech. The funds were divided between agriculture and engineering departments. Today, the school offers three scholarships named in his honor.

The program promotes the study of animal nutrition by providing students with research opportunities. It is supported by the endowment established by John Lee Pratt, who was a cattle owner and former CEO of General Motors. The endowment provides nearly $1 million annually to the college, of which $150,000 supports scholarships and the senior research fellow program. The remaining funds support visiting scholars and graduate student research.

Marcus Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The Marcus Undergraduate Research Fellowship is an award for undergraduate students who have a passion for research. The award provides $3,000 toward the student’s research project. The student must work with a faculty mentor to complete the project. The faculty mentor must be a tenured or tenure-track full-time faculty member who agrees to supervise the student’s project.

The project may involve examining the intersection between visual anthropology and the history of activist media production. The student must register for at least 1 semester credit during the fellowship semester. Applicants can apply for the fellowship through their department, and their DGS or DEO can recommend up to three student applications. The CLAS Associate Dean for Graduate Education, Gabriella McDermott, recommends that students apply for the fellowship.

This year, fifteen undergraduate students were given the opportunity to participate in a research program that focuses on pressing issues. They worked closely with faculty mentors to develop an understanding of the issues they are trying to tackle. They were also able to work with professional mentors to gain a deeper understanding of these problems.

The application process begins in November of each year. The deadline for submission is February 8 of the following year. Applications received after the deadline will not be reviewed. Students who are selected will be invited to an interview in late February or early March. Final decisions will be announced in March 2022. There are no residency requirements, but the student must be available to conduct full-time research in the summer of 2022.

The George and Judy Marcus Funds for Excellence in Liberal Arts are committed to diversity and inclusion. Their $25 million donation last year made it possible for these awards. These fellowships recognize and encourage students with unique backgrounds and skills. By supporting research and scholarship, these funds can help students gain valuable experience for their future.

John Lee Pratt Engineering Undergraduate Fellows

Undergraduate students can apply for the John Lee Pratt Engineering Undergraduate Fellow program. This program offers students the opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Pratt Fellows also earn course credits in their majors. To apply, students must show a strong aptitude for research and obtain the approval of the program’s director.

Students who complete the program are expected to complete an intensive research project in Civil Engineering, as well as 493 and 494 courses. The project must have the approval of the program director and instructor. If students are accepted, they will work under the supervision of an experienced professor and complete their projects in the summer before beginning their coursework.

The program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research at Duke University. The fellowships are supported by the Alfred P. and William M. Sloan Foundation and provide outstanding opportunities for undergraduate students to conduct research and apply their knowledge to real-world applications. The program also provides undergraduate fellows with the chance to volunteer in faculty research laboratories and participate in hands-on projects in the lab.

As part of the fellowship, the John Lee Pratt Engineering Undergraduate Fellow program will provide undergraduates with hands-on experience in the industry. Fellows are required to take part in an industrial internship that provides extensive research experience. In addition to working with faculty, students will be able to participate in collaborative research projects with other research groups at the school.

The Pratt Center also partners with the Boeing K-12 Fellows program to train the next generation of engineers to meet the challenges of the global community. Students from varying schools will participate in projects that develop their research and design skills. The fellowships are staffed by faculty from all schools. Fellows work on innovative projects in materials and data science. For example, Katrina Wisdom, a former Pratt Research Fellow in the uPHYL group, recently completed her B.S. while pursuing a PhD.

Pratt’s contributions to Virginia Tech have continued decades after his death, through support for essential university research and student opportunities. Today, three scholarships are dedicated to Pratt, including one for undergraduate students in agriculture and engineering.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) supports graduate students pursuing research-based degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Fellowships are awarded to graduate students who demonstrate exceptional potential for scientific and engineering leadership. The NSF actively encourages applications from women, underrepresented groups, veterans, and people with disabilities.

This year, over 13,000 applicants compete for 2,000 NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. USC has a strong track record, and this year it placed 24 students on the NSF’s list of award winners. These fellowships provide $34,000 in annual stipends and additional funding for tuition, enabling graduate students to pursue their research.

ASCB has also honored several graduate students. Besides the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program pratt research fellows, Cindy Reinhart-King, Adam Munoz, and Marsha Lampi recently received awards. Cindy Reinhart-King was named to the Biomedical Engineering Society’s Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Council. In addition, Joseph Miller won the Kavli Institute’s Student Travel Award. Moreover, Brooke Mason received a student travel grant and received an Honorable Mention award. These awards are also great honors for her excellent work.

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program pratth research fellows are a strong group of graduate students who are making significant contributions to the field. They are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of cancer patients and transforming the environment for cancer patients. Their work aims to help them develop better treatments and save lives. They are also committed to educating the public and making the world a better place to live.

Another program called Multi-Country Research Fellowships is aimed at supporting trans-national and regional research. It awards grants to graduate students for studies that take them to countries outside the U.S. This program awards up to $30,000 in funding. These awards are a great way to add an international component to graduate study or research.
