Robert H Lurie Medical Research Center
Founded in 1984, the Robert H Lurie Medical Research Center is one of the top institutions in the country for medical research. Located in Chicago, it is affiliated with four leading teaching hospitals, and identifies the root causes of cancer health disparities.
Founded in 1984
Located on the southeast corner of Superior Street and Fairbanks Court, the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center was designed to bring together basic and clinical researchers. It is the first new research building on the Chicago campus in more than twenty years.
The new facility will add about 1,000 people to Feinberg School of Medicine’s campus. It is a joint effort between Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. It will provide a state-of-the-art research facility for the School. It will also serve as a home for first-year medical students and will be devoted to cancer, infectious diseases, regenerative medicine, genetics, and neuroscience.
The new facility will increase Feinberg School’s research space by nearly 75 percent. In addition to the new facility, the School has renovated and expanded several campus buildings to create more than 1.2 million square feet of new laboratory space.
Affiliated with four teaching hospitals in Chicago
Founded in 1974, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center is part of Northwestern University, and is dedicated to improving cancer treatment through science. This facility serves over 16,000 patients each year, and offers a comprehensive clinical trials program. Its OncoSET Precision Medicine Program uses genomic technologies to determine the most effective personalized cancer therapy.
The Lurie Cancer Center is one of 40 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. This designation is indicative of the center’s dedication to providing the highest quality of cancer care and research. The center works with four Chicago teaching hospitals.
The Lurie Cancer Center is a research center with eight formal scientific research programs. These programs focus on prevention and control research, clinical and translational research, and basic research. Researchers are also organized into interdisciplinary teams.
Research programs offered
Located in the north suburbs of Chicago, the Lurie Medical Research Center provides access to cutting-edge technologies, research resources, and quality-of-life treatments. As one of 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Lurie Cancer Center offers research programs in cancer biology, prevention, and control. It also supports clinical trials and translational research.
The Lurie Cancer Center has a strong infrastructure that fosters interdisciplinary research. The clinical trials office conducts Phase I through Phase III clinical trials. Lurie Cancer Center also has a research administrative team that provides support for grant management and research administration.
The Lurie Cancer Center has 199 research labs. These laboratories house researchers who conduct basic science, behavioral, and prevention and control research. Researchers work in multidisciplinary teams to investigate cancer’s biology and behavior. They also study population-based research, prevention, and control. The Lurie Cancer Center also conducts clinical research within the National Clinical Trials Network.
OEMH identifies root causes of cancer health disparities
Identifying the root causes of cancer health disparities is a key step toward improving health outcomes for all racial/ethnic populations. However, addressing cancer disparities requires a multifaceted approach that addresses systemic inequalities and social issues. This is because health disparities are not a simple issue to resolve.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) defines cancer health disparities as adverse differences in cancer burden among different population groups. These disparities may be caused by several factors, including age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. These differences may also be associated with mistrust of the health care system and fatalistic attitudes about cancer.
NCI-funded researchers are working to improve health care access and to identify other ways to improve the outcomes of groups disproportionately affected by cancer. Research is also aimed at identifying genetic factors that may contribute to differences in cancer incidence and aggressiveness.
Reviews
