Treatment manipulation

Correlational studies

Unlike experimental research, which uses manipulation to examine a dependent variable, correlational research measures and evaluates relationships between variables. In correlational studies, the investigator does not manipulate any of the variables. Instead, they measure the extent to which the relationship between two or more variables is statistically significant.

In correlational research, the investigator does not believe that one variable causes another. For instance, a researcher might want to examine the relationship between the academic performance of rich and poor students. This is done by measuring the average family income of the students and comparing it to their CGPA.

A hypothetical study might show that people who keep daily to-do lists are less stressed. If a researcher were interested in this relationship, they could randomly assign some participants to make daily to-do lists, and then compare the scores of those participants on a short extraversion test to the scores of those participants on a longer extraversion test.

Case studies

Generally speaking, case studies are qualitative in nature. A case study involves a deep dive into an individual’s behaviours and characteristics. The study may be as simple as a questionnaire, or as involved as a series of interviews. A case study can be as simple as an investigation into a single individual’s health or as complex as a study into an entire social unit.

One of the more common methods of collecting data involves direct observation. For example, a researcher may observe a group of people in a laboratory setting. The researcher might instruct one group of people to give a speech while another group of people prepares a speech. The researcher might also ask a group of people to fill out a questionnaire on stress levels.

A more complex method involves a researcher performing a randomised controlled trial, wherein each group is assigned to a condition and the two groups are then randomly selected. This process produces two groups of equal characteristics. The main aim of this procedure is to produce data on which to compare and contrast the differences between the two groups.

Explanatory research
