Olivia Rodrigo Wins Several People’s Choice Awards
The People’s Choice Awards have been around for many years now. They’re considered the “principal popularity award” in the United States and celebrate different forms of entertainment, including music, movies and TV shows. Unlike other major awards shows, the voting is left up to the public.
As a result, the 2021 People’s Choice Awards were packed with star power. Not only did Selena Gomez make the cut for favorite actress, she also surprised the audience with her acceptance speech. Meanwhile, BTS swept the Music Video and Group categories, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson won the People’s Choice Award. In addition to winning a slew of other prestigious awards, Rodrigo was nominated in several other categories.
Although she wasn’t present to take home the biggest award of the night, Olivia Rodrigo snagged a handful of honors at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards. She won the best album, the best new artist, and the award for best pop song for her breakout hit “Drivers License.” Additionally, she was nominated in the best collaboration category for her song “Stay,” featuring Justin Bieber.
For the pop award, she was also nominated for best music video, as well as best new artist and favorite musical: the series. Her song “Drivers License” broke the Spotify record for the fastest time to reach 100 million streams. During her performance at the DMV, she performed several of the songs from her debut album, Sour.
Throughout the year, the Pinays have been breaking records, from record sales to breaking records in the streaming business. With the release of her debut album and her upcoming global tour, the Filipino-American pop star continues to shine.
The People’s Choice Awards recognize and award the best in music, film, television, social media, and more. Unlike other major award shows, the voting is left up to the American public, which makes the show a true crowd pleaser. There are 40 categories, and all nominees were made public on December 1.
Among the most notable entries were BTS, who won the best video, the best group, and the best acao film for “Butter”; and The Weeknd, who won the best male artist for the first time in history. Other winners included Selena Gomez, who won for her role in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, and the comedy TV award, a new award for the second year in a row.
Other notable performers included Bad Bunny, who won the Latin Artist of the Year award, and Bella Poarch, who was nominated for multiple awards. Another nod of the ilk came from the actress Halle Berry, who was honored for her role in the movie “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King,” the largest budget movie of all time.
Several notable artists snagged several of the awards, but Rodrigo stood out. The most memorable of her accomplishments was her debut single, which landed at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of only a few female artists to do so.
