Albinism is a condition in which a person has a low level of melanin, which is the pigment that gives hair and skin their color. Interestingly, there is no known cure for albinism, but people can live long, happy and healthy lives if they take steps to prevent skin damage from the sun. However, the risk of getting skin cancer is much higher than for other individuals.

There are four main types of albinism, and most of them are caused by a genetic mutation. Types 1 and 2 are the most common. These disorders produce cream or white skin, light hair, and pinkish eyes. The less common types include type 3 and type 4. People with albinism may have other problems, as well, so it’s a good idea to visit a physician for an exam.

Among the many problems associated with albinism are eye problems. Some people with the condition have to wear eyeglasses, or they need to have their eye muscles surgically repaired. This is an unfortunate situation, as it can greatly affect their quality of life. While there is no proven cure for albinism, doctors are happy to help people with this condition manage their symptoms.

Another problem associated with the albinism phenomenon is that some cultures consider albinos as witches, so they can be killed by local magic practitioners. In some African countries, the sight of a albino child brings good luck to the family. They are also considered symbols of black witchcraft.

Aside from a number of other health concerns, some people with albinism have a greater risk of skin cancer than their peers, even though they may be wearing sunscreen. One study estimates that the risk of getting skin cancer in people with albinism is five times that of the general population.

Another related hazard is that people with albinism tend to suffer from dry eye. Although there is no cure for this, ophthalmologists can examine the eyes and determine whether or not there is a vision impairment associated with the albinism phenomenon. If the doctor finds any underlying issues, treatments may be available.

Other health concerns include the fact that people with albinism are at a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes. These conditions can be prevented if they are diagnosed early on. To protect yourself from the sun, a hat, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses can be helpful. Additionally, it is important to avoid smoking as it can increase the risk of lung cancer.
