Kay Starr – Musician, Jazz Singer and Symbol of the Era
Performing as a pop and jazz singer, Kay Starr had a successful career spanning the 1950s. She had two number-one hits. Her voice made her a household name and became a symbol of the era. Today, she’s one of the most admired recording artists of her generation. She died at age 94.
Her first solo hit came in 1948 with the song You Were Only Foolin’. This was followed by a string of top ten hits, including the million-selling Wheel Of Fortune. As her popularity rose in the late 1950s, she moved away from popular rock and roll to jazz, and on one of her albums, she collaborated with guitarist Ben Webster for the song More Than You Know.
