Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Mohali Campus

Located in Mohali, Punjab, India, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) is an autonomous public university. The institute conducts undergraduate, masters and PhD courses in various fields of science.

BS-MS degree programme

BS-MS is a five-year degree programme that is offered by IISER Mohali. It is an integrated program that brings talented students into the research fold. The curriculum is divided into subject electives, which enable students to craft their own programs.

The programme also promotes interdisciplinarity. Students are encouraged to participate in research activities in other leading research labs. Students are also given the opportunity to work on short research projects during their summer vacations. In addition to this, students are given the opportunity to visit other universities in different countries.

The course is offered in the areas of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Humanities. Candidates who pass the exam can apply for PhD programmes. In addition to this, students can apply for the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship. This scholarship provides a monthly income of about 70,000 – 80,000 rupees.

Students interested in pursuing BS-MS course must have passed the 10+2 exam. They should have an average score in the science stream. The eligibility criteria include a valid score in JEST or UGC-NET. In addition to this, the candidates are required to fill in the application form with their educational qualifications, signatures, photographs, and identity documents.

PhD course

Among the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, IISER Mohali is one of the top institutions in India. It is a co-educational institution which is recognized by the Directorate of Technical Education, Punjab and the All India Council for Technical Education. The institution offers quality science education and research to students.

The institute is located in Knowledge City in Mohali, Punjab. It offers various courses in both undergraduate and graduate level. The courses include Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Chemical Sciences. The course content is up-to-date and covers inter-disciplinary electives. The institute is recognised as an Institute of National Importance.

In addition to the academic facilities, the institute provides non-academic facilities like library, cafeteria, and daycare. It also offers scholarships to students with excellent academic records and those with weak financial backgrounds.

IISER Mohali offers a PhD course in various specialisations. The specialisations include Mathematical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Humanities & Social Sciences.

National Science Day celebrations

CSIR-IICT Director Dr Srivari Chandrasekhar highlighted the work of CSIR labs and their contributions to science and research. He also appreciated the talks of award winning research students.

During National Science Day celebrations, IISER Mohali organizes various events and activities. These include science demonstrations, quiz competitions and science model exhibitions. Besides, there are also public lectures and discussions. The events usually end with a panel discussion.

On February 28, 1987, the government of India decided to celebrate the day as National Science Day. It commemorates the discovery of the Raman effect, by Indian physicist C V Raman. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his work. The effect is explained by the change in the wavelength of light when it is deflected by molecules.

On the occasion of National Science Day, colleges and schools organize science fairs and competitions. Scientists address the public through social gatherings and through the media. They discuss the latest scientific discoveries and trends.
