The Decade of 1970 – The Decade’s Number One Song
In 1970, 253 songs reached number one on Billboard’s Hot 100. There was disco music dominated by artists like the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, and K.C. The Sunshine Band. The decade also gave rise to several pop acts such as the Temptations, The Who, and The Carpenters. If you want to relive the decade’s music, check out our Spotify playlist!
Mixing influences is the decade’s top-selling song. Cher’s storytelling is one of the greatest examples. Her epic tales – Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves, Half-Breed, and Dark Lady – have made her a pop icon. The songs feature dramatic backing music that sounds like it was recorded in the back row of an enormous theater. The song is even backed by a story – “Everything Is Beautiful” was written during the Vietnam War, which was a time of civil rights activism.
