Little People and Sesame Street
Fisher-Price has been producing the Little People toy line for more than 50 years. These tiny wooden figures were first made of lithographed paper, but have since been manufactured in wood and plastic. They are small enough to fit into miniature vehicles, buildings, and even circus train sets.
During the 1970s, the company also produced an accessory set that featured Grover, Herry Monster, and Count von Count. In 1977, the company added a Sesame Street Clubhouse toy. This was the first real urban environment for the little people. The set included a clubhouse, rope swing, trap door, and three oil drum barrels. It sold for two years.
Eventually, the Fisher-Price Company merged with Mattel. Mattel purchased the Little People product line, which became a part of their toy collection. After the merger, Fisher-Price was able to expand the number of products they offered. By the 1990s, the Little People were becoming more popular with children.
Fisher-Price has since licensed the Sesame Street series, and has released play sets featuring the characters. Most of these toys are designed to fit the child’s hand, as well as inspire their imaginations. Some of the Little People sets include a fire truck and a circus train.
Fisher-Price has also had tie-ins with Disney, and has created Weeble sets. They also have produced a line of learning zoos, where children can learn about 26 animals. A “Little People A to Z learning zoo” was released in 2007. The set features 26 animals, including a dinosaur, a pelican, and an elephant.
In the early 1990s, Little People went through a drastic redesign. The original figures were redesigned for children, but the faces and bodies of the little people were changed. In addition, they were made a bit smaller and more detailed.
As of 2007, there have been 138 episodes produced in the Little People franchise. All of them have been published on DVDs and VHS. There are also six music videos. The most recent video, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” was released on April 21, 2010. Other notable video releases have been the “Sing Along Classics: Little People” album, which includes 15 songs, and the “Sesame Street Kids Favorite Songs: Little People” audio CD.
The company has partnered with the Committee for Children, which helps bridge the gap between school and home learning. Through this program, adults can gain tips and strategies for parenting children.
Although these toys are a favorite among children, they have become highly collectible for adults. Fisher-Price has even incorporated a “FAMILY ALERT” safety program to prevent accidental choking and strangulation.
