Become a Travel Endoscopy Tech

Endoscopy techs are healthcare professionals who help doctors and nurses perform a variety of procedures in a medical setting. Their duties are largely related to preparing and sterilizing endoscopes, which are small cameras that can be used to view various parts of the body. They also support patients and their family members during endoscopic procedures.

A career as an endoscopy technician may be the right choice for you if you want to work in a hospital setting, but do not wish to become a doctor. You can choose to earn a certificate or associate’s degree in this field, or you can pursue on-the-job training.

Getting started as an endoscopy technician is fairly easy. You can start working in this field as soon as you complete high school, or you can pursue formal education in an endoscopy technology program. These programs are typically offered by vocational, junior and community colleges and last anywhere from one to two years.

Coursework in a certificate program can include classroom lectures and hands-on labs that teach you how to handle gastrointestinal anatomy, surgical equipment and medical terminology. You will learn how to prepare endoscopes for the surgeon and how to maintain them after the procedure.

You will also learn about how to sterilize and disinfect GI scopes for use during procedures. Many hospitals will require endoscopy technicians to hold a certification in endoscope reprocessing, and this is an excellent way to gain the skills and knowledge needed to work in this field.

Some hospitals may even offer the option of taking a six-week certification course in endoscope reprocessing to enhance your chances of landing a job as an endoscopy technician. The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) offers a flexible endoscope reprocessor certification exam, which can help you stand out from the competition when searching for employment.

Another certification that can be useful in this career is the Surgical Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery – Certified credential, which is available to students who have completed an associate’s degree in surgical technology. These credentials are also available to graduates of the San Jacinto College surgical technology program, which combines classroom learning with supervised clinical experience.

Travel endoscopy technicians are agile healthcare professionals who are prepared to meet a changing workload. They are also knowledgeable about current endoscopic technologies and have the ability to address any emergencies quickly. As a result, this career can be a good fit for people who are looking for a flexible schedule and the chance to see new places.
