Obtaining funding opportunities for my research at Stony Brook can be difficult. There are many different sources of funding, and not all of them are relevant to all undergraduates. It can be especially difficult to find research opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition, undergraduate research has a low participation rate.
A number of sources of funding are available for students pursuing graduate degrees. Stony Brook University is dedicated to diversifying its graduate programs. There are many fellowships for graduate students, and some are awarded by departments. Besides, the graduate school offers a tuition scholarship for supported students.
Several federal agencies fund research at the national level. This includes the American Chemical Society, which supports research in cell biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, and behavior.

I-STEM
Located on the affluent mid-Suffolk County side of Long Island, Stony Brook University is home to one of the world’s premier biotechnology teaching centers. The center’s biotechnology labs are housed in three facilities: the Micro-centruuges lab, the Thermalcyclers lab, and the Water-bath lab. The center accommodates up to four school groups a day.
The biotechnology teaching center is home to one of the world’s largest biotechnology collections. The Biotechnology Teaching Center also houses a plethora of microcentruuges, incubators, thermalcyclers, and water-baths. In addition to the biotechnology teaching center, Stony Brook also houses an excellent laboratory for microbiology. The Biotechnology Teaching Center’s laboratory facilities can handle large labs and small labs alike. For example, a large lab can accommodate as many as eight undergraduate students, while a smaller lab can accommodate as many as twenty. The biotechnology teaching center’s laboratory facilities are equipped with the latest technology in microbiology and biotechnology. The labs are open to visiting researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates.
Storm Surge Research Group
During the recent flooding of Hurricane Sandy, the Stony Brook Storm Surge Research Group provided technical expertise to the public. The group focuses on predicting ocean storm surges and floods in the New York metropolitan area. This group also works to develop regional methodologies to protect critical infrastructure.
Stony Brook’s research team has developed a real-time storm surge prediction system. This system is made up of a composite storm surge model that tracks and predicts storm surges in the metro New York area.
The system is used to develop risk assessment models for coastal cities and ecosystems. In addition, researchers measure temperature, salinity and buoys in the Great South Bay. These measurements are used to create a storm surge model that incorporates the dense deep current system of the North Atlantic Ocean.
The research group has been funded by New York Sea Grant for more than a decade. It is also part of the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency. The group aims to develop a storm surge barrier system to protect New York City and other coastal communities from flooding.
