The Pfizer Award for Research Excellence is Available to PhD Students at Rutgers University
A new fellowship awarded by Pfizer is available for graduate students at Rutgers University. The fellowship, worth $300,000 over five years, provides a stipend and research support. It also covers summer internships with the company. Graduate students receive professional development and networking opportunities.
The award recognizes outstanding work in the fields of immunology, molecular biology, and other related fields. The recipient’s research must contribute to the advancement of human health. For instance, the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence in Interferon and Cytokine Research recognizes research that contributes to the development and progression of major diseases.
The award is also given to graduate students working in areas related to animal health. One winner is Dr. Claudio Verdugo, a third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology. He is studying zoonotic diseases and the Hepatitis E virus.
The award also includes a $10,000 cash prize and a plaque. The recipient is required to present a formal presentation at the ASPPH annual meeting. The first recipient of the award, Dr. David Kleinbaum, was announced in 2005, and the second recipient was named in 2006.
Other students receiving the award include Joseph Thornton and Rachel Wiegand. Both are in their final year of study. They will share the award with their mentors. The award will be presented at a ceremony on March 31. Besides the recipients, the award is also presented to graduate students who have demonstrated academic achievement, scholarly/creative activity, and service.

The Research Excellence Doctoral Fellowships provide funding to 30 PhD students each year. These fellowships provide a stipend and tuition credits. In most cases, recipients receive funding for up to two years. In addition, college-level funding is available through teaching assistant positions.
